Senior Lunch Senior lunches, provided by the Community Action Agency, are served at Township Hall every Monday through Thursday at 12 PM. Meals are available for dine-in or takeout. For any schedule updates, please check our Facebook page . Menu View the current Senior Lunch Menu . Copies of the menu are also always available at township hall. Menu items may occasionally change based on availability or the chef’s discretion. For any questions, please call ahead or check with the kitchen at 906-493-5059. Delivery Delivery is available through Meals on Wheels and the Community Action Agency for those who need it. Please arrange with the kitchen at 906-493-5059 for a one-time delivery or regular delivery of meals. Cost Suggested donation is $3 for seniors 60 & up and $6 for everyone else. Chef Frank’s culinary career spans from Detroit to Drummond Island, including 11 years at Bayside Dining and nearly 16 years as executive chef at the Sault Ste. Marie Country Club. His passion for food runs deep, shaped by decades of experience and a love of cooking that started in a busy family kitchen. Senior Lunch is served Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 12 PM. Announcements Online Reservations Available Make your Drummond Island Township Park Campground reservation here . Blue Recycling Cart Winter Schedule Beginning the week of November 3, 2025, the blue recycling cart will be picked up every Wednesday morning. The cart, located next to the ice rink, is available seven days a week except on pickup mornings. Accepted Materials (Blue Cart): • Clean glass bottles and jars (any color, no lids) • Metal cans, aerosol cans, aluminum foil, and metal lids • Newspapers, envelopes, magazines, and paper bags • Clean plastic containers #1–7 (no plastic bags or plastic film) Not Accepted: • Garbage, syringes, or medical waste • Styrofoam, vinyl siding, PVC, toys, furniture, or paper cups • Window glass, dishes, ceramics, light bulbs, batteries, or electronics Cardboard Recycling (White Trailer): Clean, flattened cardboard should be stacked toward the back of the white trailer next to the blue cart. Please fill the trailer completely to the top before moving forward with additional cardboard. Remember — no plastic bags of any kind should be placed in either of our recycling trailers. If you bring your recycling in a plastic bag, please empty the bag into the trailer and take the plastic bag home with you for disposal or reuse. Free Smoke and CO Detectors for Island Residents Drummond Island Fire & Rescue is partnering with the MI Prevention Program to provide and install free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for Drummond Island residents. Sign up at the Frank J. Sasso Township Hall window. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Between 2018–2022, nearly 60% of home fire deaths occurred in homes with no or non-working alarms, most often due to missing or dead batteries. Every home should have: • One on each level • One in each hallway • One outside each sleeping area • One in every bedroom The program is free to all Michigan residents and includes installation by Drummond Island Fire & Rescue. A brief home survey will be completed during installation. Specialized alarms are also available for residents with disabilities. Protect your home and family—sign up today at Township Hall. Chippewa County Board Vacancies – Islanders Encouraged to Apply The Chippewa County Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill several upcoming board and committee vacancies beginning in 2026. These volunteer positions play an important role in shaping services that impact residents throughout the county, from veterans’ affairs and public health to transportation and regional development. Openings include: Building Code Board of Appeals Department of Health & Human Services Board Department of Veterans Affairs (2 openings) Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning & Development (Township-level appointment) EUP Transportation Authority Hiawatha Behavioral Health Authority Substance Use Disorder Policy Board Residents of Drummond Island are encouraged to apply. Find the original notice from Chippewa County here. Serving on a county board is a great way to make a difference and represent the island’s perspective in county decision making. Applications are due by Monday, November 10, 2025, before 12:00 noon. Application forms can be downloaded at www.chippewacountymi.gov or picked up at the Chippewa County Administrator’s Office, Courthouse 1st Floor, 319 Court Street, Sault Ste. Marie. For questions, call (906) 635-6330. Appointments will be made at the County Board’s Organizational Meeting in January. Monthly Board Meeting 1st Tuesday of each month The public is welcome to join us for our monthly township board meeting on the 1st Tuesday of every month. Our agendas and minutes are posted on our website as they become available. Blue Recycling Trailer The blue recycling trailer is located next to the ice rink off of Pine St near the intersection of Townline Rd. No plastic bags of any kind are accepted in the recycling trailer. Cardboard Recycling Trailer The white cardboard recycling trailer is located next to the ice rink off of Pine St near the intersection of Townline Rd. Please follow the above directions, flattening all boxes and loading them towards the back and top before moving towards the front. Update to Garbage Service on the Island Garbage collection on Drummond Island is provided by private businesses. Current options include GFL dumpsters with Friday pickup, Carl Hartman’s residential pickup service, and prepaid bag drop-off at Bailey’s Service Station and EZ Mart. When Carl’s new transfer station is ready to open, the gas station drop-off sites will close, and his facility will become the island’s garbage drop-off location. He will also continue offering weekly or biweekly residential pickup. The timing of the station opening is not yet known. Join us for pickleball this summer at the Drummond Island Township Golf Course tennis courts in the wamer months and the elementary school gym in the colder months. Play is free for anyone. No experience necessary. Sign up on the Team Reach app and watch the calendar for announcements each week. Sessions will be canceled when not enough players sign up, so please use the app to let us know you will be joining. Yoga at Town Hall & Big Shoal Beach Germinate Wellness hosts free (donation-based) yoga classes at the township hall and Big Shoal Beach. All levels are welcome, and extra yoga mats are available if needed. Spin Classes Did you know that the Drummond Island Medical Center offers free spin classes? Three instructors guide you through an hour-long spin class, no experience required. Find their sign-ups on their Spin On The Island Facebook page . Questions about burn permits? If you’re planning to burn on Drummond Island, always check the Michigan DNR burn permit website before you start. This site will tell you if burning is allowed for the day. The Township and Fire Department do not issue burn permits. You can find the daily burn status here: https://www.michigan.gov/.../forestry/fire/burn-permit Summer Tax Due Date Just a friendly reminder that tax bills are due on Monday, September 15, 2025. The township treasurer, Jeanette Alguire, will have extended hours that day from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Frank J. Sasso Township Hall, 29935 E Pine St, Drummond, MI. On other weekdays, taxes can be paid during regular office hours from 9 AM to 2 PM. Township Park Campground & Nature Trails The Drummond Island Township Park is located just off M-134, approximately 5 miles east of the ferry dock. The park features a 47-site campground that accommodates both tents and RVs up to 31 feet, with each site including a picnic table and fire pit. About half of the sites offer electric hookups, and shared amenities include outhouses and two drinking water spigots. The park is open year-round, with camping available May 1 through October 31. Online reservations are now available. ➡️ [Click here for more details about the campground, site amenities, and how to reserve your stay.] Golf Course The Drummond Island Golf Course is located on Fairchild Lane, off Townline Road, and just north of the Four Corners. It is a 9-hole, par 36 course with affordable rates. It offers a unique feature: an airport runway that runs along the side of the par 3 No. 4. The course also offers fling golf, a driving range, practice putting green , tennis & pickle ball and a pro shop. There are carts available to rent as well. Call (906) 493-5406 to schedule a tee time or reserve a court. Find more information about the golf course here. Historical Museum The Drummond Island Historical Museum is located at 33492 S. Water Street on the north side of the island. The museum is open from late May through mid-October. The museum features island history and includes artifacts from Native Americans, Finnish Farmers and Yankee Settlers. Museum hours are 1 to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Big Shoal Beach Big Shoal Beach is located on the southeast part of the island off of Johnswood Road. Take Johnswood approximately 6.5 miles from the 4 corners, then make a right on Big Shoal Bay Road. This sandy beach is approximately a mile down on the right. There is parking and a public toilet. The water is shallow and the lake bottom here is relatively sandy making it a popular spot for families with small children.
